WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS?

The new coronavirus got its name because it looks like a crown when viewed under a microscope. In December 2019, a new variant called SARS-CoV-2 was identified. Causing the disease COVID-19, the coronavirus can infect people in two ways:

- By inhaling droplets with viral particles

- Through mucous membranes by contact of hands or objects contaminated with viral particles

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF THE CORONAVIRUS?

The first symptoms are fever, body pain, cough, sore throat, loss of smell or taste and headache. In more severe cases, it can progress to pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome or even kidney failure. People with comorbidities, such as heart or lung disease, individuals over 60 and patients with low immunity may have more severe manifestations.

IS THERE A TREATMENT AND VACCINE AGAINST CORONAVIRUS?

There is no specific medication for the treatment of COVID-19 with proven effectiveness. Treatment consists of clinical support, sometimes in an intensive care unit in the case of patients who develop the severe form of the disease. There are several studies being conducted in an attempt to produce a vaccine against the new coronavirus, but all are still in the early stages of testing.

HOW TO REDUCE THE RISK OF INFECTION WITH THE NEW CORONAVIRUS?

Avoid close contact with people with acute respiratory infections.

Wash your hands frequently, especially after contact with surfaces that may be contaminated or before touching the mucous membranes (mouth, nose and eyes).

Use disposable tissue for nasal hygiene.

When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose with your arm or a disposable tissue.

Wear masks covering your nose and mouth whenever you leave the house.

Wash hands after coughing or sneezing.

Avoid agglomerations.

Do not share personal items, such as cutlery, plates, glasses or bottles.

Keep rooms well ventilated.

When leaving home, try to keep a distance of 2 meters from other people.

Avoid traveling, but if necessary, include a surgical mask, disposable tissue and hand sanitizer.

Don't self-medicate.
