The ancients already said: health begins with the mouth.
Currently, this is understood in two ways: on the one hand, there is the nature of the foods we eat; on the other, the way we chew them, which will help or hinder their digestion.
For correct chewing, nothing is more important than a good dentition – including the aesthetic and functional balance of the teeth. It is in this scenario that orthodontics appear, correcting imperfections that may seem isolated, but that harm the entire organism.
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialty that aims to correct dental and facial imperfections using fixed or removable braces. A balance is created between the jaws and surrounding tissues so that correct chewing occurs, which in turn is the beginning of the food digestion cycle. Facial harmony involves occlusion of the teeth and their bone bases, which ensures correct chewing.
When orthodontic prevention is carried out, in addition to avoiding future problems, health is generally gained, as chewing food better, it will be better absorbed by the body.
When is treatment indicated?
Orthodontic treatment will be indicated if poor dental or skeletal positioning is diagnosed.
Common issues:
Class I – The dental arches are well positioned, but there is not enough space for all teeth to accommodate.
Class II – The upper arch is far ahead, or the lower arch is far behind.
Class III – The lower arch is in front of the upper arch or the upper arch is far behind.
Open bite – When, in the bite, the lower teeth do not touch the upper teeth.
Crossbite – When, in the bite, the upper teeth are inside the lower teeth.
Deep bite – When, in the bite, the upper teeth cover the lower teeth.
What is the best age for treatment?
Currently, orthodontic treatment, with modern techniques and materials, everybody can benefit, from a child with problems at an early stage, to an adult with problems at more advanced levels.
Children, from birth, must be accompanied by a pediatric dentist, who will provide adequate guidance regarding the prevention of dental malpositioning. When necessary, orthodontic treatment will be indicated.
Some problems need treatment at 4 years of age! Therefore, it is important to be aware of the signs of a possible dental or skeletal problem, regardless of age.
Adults often need treatment due to some symptoms such as headaches, pains and crackles in the face (muscles and / or joints), pain and ringing in the ears, little mouth opening etc. These signs can be caused by poor dental positioning. Many of them are difficult to perceive and only the dentist will be able to detect them and indicate the best treatment.
Orthodontic treatment – children
Phase I – It is the period of preventive treatment, using fixed and / or removable devices.
Conditions are given for permanent teeth to grow correctly.
Phase II – It is the corrective treatment period, that is, the problem is already existent.
Through the fixed appliance all teeth that are incorrectly positioned will be corrected.
Orthodontic treatment – adults
Currently, a large number of adults are undergoing orthodontic treatment. This is mainly due to innovative techniques and modern materials, which allow you, even with a device, to continue with your normal activities.
Orthodontic / surgical treatment
When there is a problem involving bone base size in adulthood, orthodontic treatment associated with orthognathic surgery is indicated. First the teeth are corrected with a fixed orthodontic appliance, and then, in the surgical stage, skeletal problems (size of the bone base) are corrected.
Benefits
The greatest result of the treatment is to provide a significant improvement in the patient’s self-esteem through aesthetic excellence, in addition to the lower rate of cavities and less accumulation of tartar due to the ease of cleaning of the teeth when they are correctly aligned. With the teeth in the correct positions, a better distribution of occlusal forces occurs during chewing, protecting the roots of the teeth, supporting bones, gums and temporomandibular joints.
Technology
Currently, the use of aligners (Invisalign) to correct changes in the positioning of teeth is the most aesthetic form of orthodontic treatment, with results similar to those obtained with conventional treatments. This treatment consists of the use of transparent acetate plates, which move the teeth gradually.
In addition, the current conventional fixed braces allow a treatment performed in less time, with the need to apply less force on the teeth, generating less discomfort to the patient.
At Omint Dental Clinic, in addition to Invisalign, removable or fixed orthodontic and orthopedic appliances, aesthetic (transparent) and metallic appliances are used.
